Self Portrait in Tension explores how bodies are built, both politically and materially. Through sculptural photography, it questions the ways gender and sexuality are assembled, destabilising fixed ideas of the gendered subject. Layered interventions across performance, installation and staged imagery reveal the body as both medium and contested site. The Shibari knots, a Japanese art of rope bondage, form part of the work. By reconstructing their own form into fabric and Perspex sculptures, the artist blurs the boundary between subject and object. This self-portraits oscillate between pleasure, pain and ecstatic intensity, presenting the body as a fetishised participant within its own making.
